Hardware Installation (CXP-12 Cameras)#
Depending on your camera model, you can establish up to four CXP-12 connections.
General Considerations#
To operate your Basler CXP-12 camera, you need to install the following software and hardware components:
- The Basler pylon Software Suite.
For information about the required pylon version, refer to the topic about your camera model. You can find your camera model in the "Models" section. -
An acquisition card.

You can also use frame grabbers by other manufacturers. In that case, observe the documentation of the corresponding manufacturers to ensure proper installation. The frame grabbers must be fully compliant with the CoaXPress Standard version 2.0. Basler recommends using devices with a maximum stream packet size ≥ 1 KByte.

Installing the Camera#
Before You Start#
Make sure that the following items are available before starting the hardware installation:
- A Basler CXP-12 camera.
- A computer equipped with a frame grabber or a suitable interface card, e.g., the Basler CXP-12 Interface Card 4C.
- If you want to power the camera via the interface card or frame grabber (Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP)), make sure that the interface card or frame grabber is connected to the power supply of your computer.
- If you aren't using PoCXP, you need an external power supply. Make sure that the power supply meets the requirements listed in the topic about your camera model.
- If required, a suitable lens.
Contact Basler technical support if you need assistance in determining the best lens for your application. - If required, a suitable mount.
- Depending on your camera model, up to four CoaXPress data cables with appropriate connectors.
- As applicable, a power or a power and I/O cable with appropriate connectors.
- As applicable, cooling elements, e.g., heat sinks.

- Make sure that the camera is disconnected from any power supply and the host computer is shut down and unplugged from the power outlet.
- Make sure that the camera is pointing down during the next installation steps to prevent dust from getting on the sensor.
To install the camera:
- Remove the protective seal or cap from the camera front.
- If required, attach a mount to the camera.
Make sure that the mount is attached in the proper direction with the lens mount facing out. - If required, attach a suitable lens to the camera.
Be careful not to insert the lens any deeper than specified in the Maximum Allowed Lens Intrusion topic. - Provide sufficient heat dissipation.
- Connect the camera to the computer and power.
- If you are using Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP):
- Connect the Micro-BNC (HD-BNC) connector(s) of the camera to the Micro-BNC port(s) of the interface card(s) or frame grabber(s) using the CoaXPress data cable(s).
boost V cameras: The connector labeled with "1" must be connected last
Make sure to connect at least two CoaXPress data cables. If you're using just one CoaXPress data cable, power must be supplied via the power connector.
boost R and racer 2 L cameras: If you're using only one CoaXPress data cable, make sure to connect the cable to the master connector of the camera.
- Connect the Micro-BNC (HD-BNC) connector(s) of the camera to the Micro-BNC port(s) of the interface card(s) or frame grabber(s) using the CoaXPress data cable(s).
- If you are using an external power supply:
- Connect the CoaXPress data cable(s) to the camera and interface card(s) or frame grabber(s) as described above.
- boost V cameras: Connect the power cable to the Hirose micro HR10A-7R-4S connector of the camera.
boost R cameras: Connect the power I/O cable to the M8 6-pin connector of the camera.
racer 2 L cameras: Connect the power cable to the 12-pin Hirose micro receptacle of the camera.
If you're building your own cables, observe the pin assignment detailed in the topic about your camera model. - Connect the open end of the power I/O or power cable to a power supply.
Alternatively, you can use a power supply of the Basler Original Equipment range. - boost V cameras: Connect the power cable to the Hirose micro HR10A-7R-4S connector of the camera.
boost R cameras: Connect the power I/O cable to the M8 6-pin connector of the camera.
racer 2 L cameras: Connect the power cable to the 12-pin Hirose micro receptacle of the camera.
If you're building your own cables, observe the pin assignment detailed in the topic about your camera model. - Connect the open end of the power I/O or power cable to a power supply.
Alternatively, you can use a power supply of the Basler Original Equipment range. - Plug the power supply into a power outlet.
- If you are using Power over CoaXPress (PoCXP):
- Switch on the power to your host computer and let the computer boot up.
The status LED(s) of the camera indicate different operating and connection states. Each LED indicates the status of a CXP connection via a Micro-BNC connector.
